What is Social Media?

 

I thought I’d just drop a quick post explaining what social media is, and what type of content social media sites include. Social media has grown at an almost unsustainable rate over the last few years. The likes of HI5, Bebo and Myspace now seem to be things of the past with the likes of Facebook and Twitter now running the show. Of course, there is plenty of room for more social networks as long as they are unique and offer the users something useful.

 

Personally I used to hate social networks. Now there are so many features that it is simply not a viable option for me not to be using them. It saves me mixing personal and business emails together and allows me to contact people I have not see in ages!

 

Social Media sites include:

 

• Blogs
• Message boards
• Forums, which could be described as the originator of Social Media, as they have been extremely popular for year
• Social networks which include the likes of MySpace and Facebook
• Video sharing, You Tube is definitely the king here!
• Picture sharing Photobucket
• Podcasts
• Vidcasts
• Wikis
• Groups

 

The great thing with Social Media is they are interactive with the user/reader. Most allow the user/reader the chance to edit or post their views and comment on others views relating to a particular subject. The constant participation relating to topics make them extremely popular, with most people book marking at least 5-10 social media websites that they visit on a regular basis!
